Its all About Janet


Good morning folks 
The next couple of days will likely be a bit choppy as  Yellen delivers semi-annual monetary policy testimony  today and then on Wed faces a grilling from a Republican controlled Senate committee.I am not expecting any big fireworks but you never know. 

There are more rumblings of some sort of an agreement in the works for Greece and Oil remains under pressure. Financials are popping premarket may get some follow through there after the open. Solar plays are active off First Solar announcement last night and home builders are making a move off of TOL earnings.

IN THE NEWS TODAY
U.S. stock futures were little changed in early trading, after the Dow andS&P 500 Monday backed off record highs. But the Nasdaq did manage to eke out a small gain to post its fourth-highest close ever. (CNBC)
The direction of the markets may be influenced by Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen's testimony on Capitol Hill today and tomorrow. Investors are hoping for greater clarity on interest rates and the economy. (CNBC)

Any hopes of a sustained oil rally all but disappeared as doubts were raised over speculation of an anticipated cut in production from OPEC. U.S. crude prices are down over 50 percent since June. (CNBC)

Greece Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis sent a list of reform proposals around midnightjust making a deadline set by its international creditors. The Athens Stock Exchange was up more than 6 percent. (CNBC)

Dow component Home Depot (HD) this morning reported quarterly earnings and revenue that beat expectations. The home improvement retailer did saycurrency fluctuations would impact full-year earnings. (CNBC)

JPMorgan Chase (JPM), also a Dow stock, plans to charge large institutional clients fees for some deposits, citing new rules that make holding money for the clients too costly. (WSJ)

U.S. officials are investigating at least 10 major banks for the possible rigging of precious metals markets, despite European regulators dropping a similar inquiry after finding no evidence of wrongdoing. (WSJ)

Tumblr Founder and CEO David Karp joins CNBC's "Squawk Box" at8:40 a.m. ET. Tumblr was purchased by Yahoo (YHOO) for $1.1 billion nearly two years ago.

Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald has apologized for making false claims about having served in the military's special forces, the latest scandal to hit the besieged department. (USA Today)

Smoking, growing, and possessing marijuana has become legal in Alaska, which joins Washington and Colorado as the third state to approve recreational pot. (USA Today)


Cold records across the Northeast and Midwest continued to tumble thanks to a bitter blast of Arctic cold still lingering from the weekend. Residents in New York City woke up to temperatures of just 2 degrees. (NBC News & NY Daily News)

BY THE NUMBERS
Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is among this afternoon's after-the-bell reports, along with Boston Beer (SAM), DreamWorks Animation (DWA), and First Solar(FSLR).
Meanwhile, First Solar and SunPower (SPWR) said late Monday that they're intalks to form a joint venture to hold some of their solar power-generating assets. The joint venture would then potentially be floated as an initial public offering.

Toll Brothers (TOL) this morning reported earnings and revenue that easily beating estimates, as it sold more homes at higher prices. Toll earned 44 cents per share for its first quarter, well above estimates of 30 cents.

Following Monday's existing home sales figures, the S&P Case-Shiller report on home prices for December is out at 9 a.m. ET. Economists expect a 4.5 percent year-over-year increase in prices in the nation's largest markets, slightly stronger than November's 4.3 percent rise.

At 10 a.m. ET, the Conference Board's consumer confidence index is seen coming in at 99.5 for February, down from 102.9 in January.

STOCKS TO WATCH
Stifel Financial (SF) is buying privately held Sterne Agee for $150 million, continuing a series of acquisitions in recent years to expand its brokerage business.
Stifel Chairman and CEO Ron Kruszewski joins us at 8:30 a.m. ET to talk about the deal.

Jana Partners raised its stake in Computer Sciences (CSC) to 5.9 percent, according to an SEC filing, saying CSC shares are undervalued and represent "an attractive investment opportunity."

Express Scripts (ESRX) earned an adjusted $1.39 per share for its latest quarter, a penny above estimates, with revenue essentially in line. The pharmacy benefits manager issued current quarter and full-year guidancethat was shy of forecasts.

Tenet Healthcare (THC) missed estimates by 15 cents with adjusted quarterly profit of $1.03 per share, though revenue did beat estimates. Tenet did see more patients at its hospitals, and projected full-year results that are above Street estimates.


BHP Billiton (BHP) beat estimates with its latest earnings report, and the mining company promised to maintain or increase its dividend even as it deals with falling commodity prices and delays or cancellations of expansion projects.
