After a sizable jump in application volume two weeks ago, last week was payback time in the mortgage market. Total applications fell 4.3 percent, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.
Americans who lost their homes to foreclosure will be able to buy them back at current market value if the properties are owned by housing finance giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
It’s a light day for corporate earnings, with only Deere & Co. (DE) among major companies releasing reports this morning. There are no companies of note scheduled to issue quarterly reports after today’s closing bell.
After-the-bell TuesdayTiVo (TIVO) fell a penny shy of estimates with quarterly profit of 6 cents per share, with revenue in line with forecasts. But the maker of digital video recorders did see services and technology growth come in at the high end of forecasts.
Stocks to watch
Activist investor Carl Icahn raised his stake in Hertz (HTZ) to 10.77 percent from 8.48 percent. Already the largest shareholder, the billionaire successfully pushed for management  changes at the rental car company.
The Justice Department is said to be investigating whether anHSBC (HSBC) employee may have leaked confidential information to a hedge fund. The U.K. bank self-reported the alleged incident to U.S. and British authorities.
Visa (V) has been sued by rival Discover Financial (DFS).Discover accuses Visa of offering economic incentives to merchants to choose the Visa network for transactions.
With a six-month cooling off period endingthere’s speculation Pfizer (PFE) could make another bid for its U.K. rival AstraZeneca (AZN). Meanwhile, a report by a Jefferies analyst predicted Mylan (MYL) as the most likely acquisition target for Pfizer.
Herbalife (HLF) CEO Michael Johnson bought 750,000 shares, exercising options that were set to expire in December, in what’s being termed a “vote of confidence” in the nutritional products maker’s future.
